Scene 4

Meet the Tortoise

Meet the Tortoise
Also living in the meadow was a tortoise. He was small and round, with a beautiful dark green shell and kind, gentle eyes. He walked very, very slowly wherever he went. But he never seemed to mind.
Scene 5

Tortoise's Daily Walk

Every morning the tortoise took the same walk along the country road. One step. Then another step. Then another. He liked to look at the flowers. He liked to feel the warm sun on his shell. Slow and steady, that was his way.
Scene 6

Hare Teases Tortoise

Hare Teases Tortoise
One day the hare saw the tortoise walking along the road. 'Well, well, well!' laughed the hare. 'Look how slow you are! I could run to the big oak tree and back before you take ten steps!' The hare thought this was very funny.
Scene 7

The Other Animals Feel Bad

Scene 8

Tortoise Has an Idea

Tortoise Has an Idea
But that night, as the tortoise lay under the stars, he had an idea. A brave idea. A wonderful idea. He smiled to himself and closed his eyes. Tomorrow, everything would be different.
Scene 9

The Challenge

The Challenge
The next morning the tortoise found the hare. 'I would like to challenge you to a race,' said the tortoise, in his quiet steady voice. The hare stared at him. Then he burst out laughing. 'You? Race me? That is the silliest thing I have ever heard!
Scene 10

Hare Accepts

Hare Accepts
Fine!' said the hare, still giggling. 'I will race you. This will be the easiest race of my life! We will race from the old stone bridge to the big red barn on the hill. Everyone will see how fast I really am.
Scene 11

Word Spreads

Word Spreads
Word of the race spread through the whole meadow. The squirrels told the rabbits. The rabbits told the birds. The birds told the deer. By afternoon, every animal in the meadow knew about the big race between the tortoise and the hare.
Scene 12

Race Day Morning

Race Day Morning
The morning of the race was bright and clear. Animals came from every corner of the meadow. They lined up along the road to watch. A wise old fox stood at the starting line with a red flag. 'This is going to be quite a day,' he said.
Scene 13

At the Starting Line

Hare Looks Back

The hare was so far ahead that when he looked back, the tortoise was just a tiny speck in the distance. 'Ha!' he laughed. 'This is too easy. He will never catch me. Not in a million years.' The hare felt very pleased with himself.
Scene 18

The Shady Tree

The Shady Tree
Just then the hare noticed a big beautiful oak tree beside the road. Its shade looked so cool and inviting. A soft breeze rustled through the leaves. 'Maybe I will just sit down for a minute,' thought the hare. 'Just one little minute.
Scene 19

Hare Falls Asleep

The Moral / End Card

The Moral / End Card
And from that day on, the hare never bragged again. And the tortoise? He just kept walking, slow and steady, the way he always did. Because sometimes it is not the fastest who wins the race, but the one who never, ever gives up. The End.
